About the SHPE Foundation

Currently, the United States is facing a shortage of technical talent. Compared to international markets, the U.S. has fewer graduates in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Additionally, our K -12 students test below their counterparts in math and science. If these trends continue, America will fall short of producing these STEM innovators needed to address the grand challenges of the 21st century.

Statistics state that Hispanics will be the majority population by 2042. Hispanic students need to be prepared to compete in the STEM fields that are projected to have the highest need for new hires. SHPE's mission is to empower the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.

Through our membership, programs, scholarships, and corporate partnerships, SHPE will inspire the next generation of STEM innovators this country needs. Join us in our quest to expand STEM literacy so that Hispanics are the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers!

Our Community Outreach Programs

SHPE-Rensselaer's largest outreach programs include our SHPE Junior Program and our Annual Outreach Weekend. These programs are dedicated to serving underrepresented high school students. We focus on developing each student's interests in the STEM fields by introducing them to our membership, higher education, and leadership activities. It is our goal to give back to our community by providing the support that is necessary to promote growth within the Hispanic community.

On-campus, SHPE-Rensselaer works with NSBE to host the Annual NSBE/SHPE Career Fair in the Rensselaer Armory. This event is open to all RPI students and recent alumni.

In 2013, SHPE-Rensselaer started the MentorSHPE program, which matches first year students with an upperclassman to make the transition to RPI as smooth as possible.

SHPE Junior.

The SHPE Junior Program aims to augment the success of high school students by providing scholarships, mentors, tutors, and other resources to overcome persistent educational barriers and encourage students to pursue areas in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

SHPE-Rensselaer has paired up with Amsterdam High School for participation in the SHPE Junior Program. Together, we can work to change the lives of students in our local community. More information can be located at: www.shpefoundation.org/pre-college/shpejr/.

About Amsterdam High School

Amsterdam High School (AHS) is located approximately 30 minutes from the RPI campus. Despite the distance, this school could not have been a better place for a SHPE Junior Program. Amsterdam High School boasts over a 25% Hispanic population, with interested and eager students. More information can be located at http://www.gasd.org/.

Outreach Weekend

SHPE Outreach is a program hosted by the undergraduate chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Attendees are offered a variety of programs in order to increase awareness of STEM as a career path and develop professional and leadership skills.
